MrBeast in Finland
In the summer of 2023, the producers of the renowned YouTube sensation, MrBeast, reached out with a unique challenge: find an Arctic Island location in Lapland for a video production. This wasn't just any shoot; it aimed to showcase the best of Lapland’s activities and the beauty of its winter landscape.
As Lapland is the perfect film location and our local Xwander team is used to working with productions large and small, we found a unique location for this purpose in Inari, Finland.
The team was brimming with ideas to build an ideal island filming set. The centrepiece was to be a "Frozen Village," serving as the main film set where various activities would happen.
A significant focus was placed on featuring Lappish delicacies, creating a unique 'MrBeasts feastables' experience. Filming The Northern Lights, was high on the wishlist.
Brainstorming sessions with Xwander took into account logistical and safety aspects. The plan included reindeer and husky rides, electric snowmobiling with Finnish Aurora Powertrain produced eSleds, and electric snow scootering with eLylys. The plan also featured ice swimming, ending with a warming session in a tent sauna.
The Arctic Island
Given the challenging filming schedule of just 1.5 days, preparation was key. The filming set had to be versatile for quick adaptations to changing needs and weather conditions. The Xwander crew was prepared to be highly reactive to the directors' requirements, varying from lighting and fire elements to managing icy conditions.
Xwander constructed an extensive Tent set over 200 square meters, featuring facilities that included lounges, a dining room, an ice movie theatre, and unique installations like a Tentsile tree tent-based "Aurora Observatory Tower" and an Ice Pool with a tent sauna.
One of the remarkable feats was towing three Aurora Huts, each weighing approximately 2 tons, over a 7 km distance on the frozen lake.
Despite time constraints, the team accomplished much, though some exciting elements, like a snowmobile-towed Jacuzzi, remained unused.
The challenging 1.5-day filming window necessitated thorough and strategic preparation.
Safety
Facing the unforgiving cold of the Arctic in Lapland, the team encountered challenging conditions during the intense filming schedule.
To combat the harsh elements, rigorous measures were implemented. Ice Safety technicians from Xwander conducted thorought testing and calculations to ensure the stability of the frozen lake, supporting the weight of structures, vehicles, and the crew.
The Wilderness First Aid Team was on standby, equipped to prevent hypothermia and handle any medical emergencies in the challening Arctic environment. These meticulous precautions underscored Xwander's commitment to the safety and well-being of the entire production crew amidst the extreme cold.
